Hyundai Mobis announced a new driver-assist technology designed to prevent rear-end collisions by autonomously accelerating a vehicle when it detects a car approaching too closely from behind. The system is expected to hit the market soon and will initially be limited to highway driving.Â
The innovation combines rear-side radar sensors and front-facing cameras with Hyundai’s Smart Cruise Control system. When a vehicle behind approaches within approximately 11 yards, the system issues a warning, either visual or audible. If the trailing vehicle continues to follow too closely, the car will accelerate to create a safer distance, provided the front camera confirms there’s room to do so.Â
Unlike current mass-market systems, which only provide alerts or automatically tighten seat belts in the event of an impending rear collision, Hyundai Mobis’ solution actively controls the vehicle to avoid a crash.Â
In addition to the acceleration feature, the company is developing autonomous lane-change functionality to help vehicles avoid rear-end threats more dramatically.
Hyundai Mobis, the parts and service arm of Hyundai Motor, says the feature is part of a broader strategy to expand vehicle safety systems beyond front-end scenarios. Executive Vice President Jung Soo-Kyung noted the company’s commitment to intelligent mobility solutions that protect drivers from hazards in all directions.Â
Rear-end collisions are among the most common types of crashes, especially on highways. Hyundai Mobis’ announcement signals growing interest among automakers and suppliers in using automated systems to reduce these incidents.
